Riding Profile

From Del Crary Park to the Peterborough lift lock and everything in between Peterborough has several attractions for tourists and residents alike. At the Kinsmen Civic Centre, children can be found playing hockey in the winter and lacrosse in the summer. During the Summer Festival of Lights patrons can enjoy free concerts and fireworks. Rich in arts and culture Peterborough offers several outlets such as: the Peterborough Arts Umbrella, Peterborough New Dance/Public Energy, the Canadian Canoe museum, Peterborough Symphony Orchestra and the Peterborough Centennial museum to name a few. Artspace is one of Canada’s oldest artist-run centre and maintains focus on contemporary art.

The riding was created in 1953 from Peterborough West riding. It consisted initially of the city of Peterborough and the townships of Galway, Cavendish, Harvey, Ennismore, Smith, Douro, Otonabee, and North Monaghn. The riding`s borders have differed slightly but has always included most or all of Peterborough County. It now consists of the County of Peterborough, excluding the townships of North Kawartha, Galway-Cavendish and Harvey and Cavan-Millbrook-North Monaghan.

Manufacturing is a major industry in Peterborough with General Electric, Quaker Oats, and General Motors Canada among the prominent employers. Peterborough was ranked number one location for business in Ontario by Canadian Business magazine in late 2004.
