PETERBOROUGH, ON - An official ceremony today marked the completion of the new Mississauga River Bridge. Dean Del Mastro, Member of Parliament for Peterborough; Jeff Leal, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough; Ronald Gerow, Warden for the County of Peterborough, and Tom Flynn, Reeve of the Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey, are pleased to see this important Canada-Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF) project come to fruition.
The Mississauga River Bridge, located on County Road 36 just east of Buckhorn, was replaced with a new two-lane steel girder, single-span bridge complete with a concrete composite bridge and guide railing.
The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario each invested up to $404,731 to the project. The County of Peterborough contributed the balance of the project’s total eligible cost of up to $1,214,194.
“The Mississauga River Bridge is a significant route for the social and economic development of our county,” said MP Del Mastro. “Our Government is pleased to have partnered with the provincial and municipal governments on this important local infrastructure project. This improved bridge allows our residents and tourists to reach their destinations and local businesses safely and efficiently for years to come.”
“The Mississauga River Bridge is an essential link for this community,” said MPP Leal. “We are pleased that as a partner in this project we are providing safe and reliable infrastructure to this growing community.”
“The County of Peterborough is excited to continue improvements to our infrastructure and meet the needs of our growing economy,” said Warden Gerow. “The Mississauga River Bridge is an important project in our Transportation Plan, and we appreciate the partnership of the provincial and federal governments in completing this endeavour.”
“The Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey thanks the federal government, the provincial government and the County of Peterborough for providing funding to repair the Mississauga River Bridge,” said Reeve Flynn. “The bridge was in dire need of repair and the firm of Looby Builders Inc. has done an excellent job. Residents of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey feel safer traveling over the new bridge.”
Under the five-year, $900-million COMRIF program, the governments of Canada and Ontario are working together with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and local partners to respond to local needs through infrastructure upgrades to provide clean, safe drinking water, better sewage systems, improved waste management processes, safer local roads and bridges, as well as other health and safety priorities.
