August 06, 2008

NORWOOD, ON – The Township of Asphodel-Norwood today held a groundbreaking ceremony to officially start upgrades to the Norwood Wastewater Treatment Plant. Dean Del Mastro, Member of Parliament for Peterborough; Jeff Leal, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough; and Doug Pearcy, Reeve of the Township of Asphodel-Norwood, are pleased to see this important Canada-Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF) project get underway.

Work on the Norwood Wastewater Treatment Plant will involve modifications to the existing plant, as well as to the main sewage pumping station. The plant will be expanded to increase the existing bio-solids treatment and storage, replace the chlorine disinfection process with UV disinfection and increase treatment to a tertiary level.

The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario are each contributing up to $2,113,333 to the project. The Township of Asphodel-Norwood is investing the balance of the project’s total eligible cost of $6,340,000.

“The Government of Canada is pleased to see the launch of this important community project,” said MP Del Mastro. “These upgrades to the Norwood Wastewater Treatment Plant will improve the reliability of the local wastewater system and contribute to environmental sustainability.”

“This infrastructure work is vital for our community,” said Reeve Pearcy. “These upgrades will improve wastewater services, which will allow the existing business community to further expand and prosper.”

Under the five-year, $900-million COMRIF program, the governments of Canada and Ontario are working together with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and local partners to respond to local needs through infrastructure upgrades to provide clean, safe drinking water, better sewage systems, improved waste management processes, safer local roads and bridges, as well as other health and safety priorities.
