GOVERNMENT OF CANADA AND GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIO MAKE INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS IN THE PETERBOROUGH RIDING
February 13, 2009

(Friday, February 13, 2009 - PETERBOROUGH, ONTARIO) Dean Del Mastro, Member of Parliament for Peterborough Riding and Jeff Leal, Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough Riding announced today that residents of the Peterborough Riding will benefit from joint federal, provincial and municipal funding to replace, upgrade and rehabilitate a variety of infrastructure projects under the Building Canada – Ontario Communities Program.  These projects are just a small example of the work of all levels of government as they commit to stimulate the Ontario economy by reducing red tape, creating jobs for Ontarians, and getting shovels in the ground sooner.

The projects named below will improve transportation efficiency and enhance local facilities and services and create local jobs, when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.

The governments of Canada and Ontario will each invest up to $8,252,925.00 in the projects. The City of Peterborough and the County of Peterborough will contribute the balance of the total eligible project costs for a total investment of up to $24,758,775.00.

“This announcement today is the result of many months of hard work, research and development put forth by municipal, provincial and federal governments – working together.” stated Dean Del Mastro, Member of Parliament for Peterborough Riding.  “Infrastructure is the backbone of our communities.  Strong infrastructure lays the ground work for economic development, job creation and a better quality of life for our residents.  Today’s announcement can only mean good things for our Riding.”

“We believe the strategic investment and infrastructure funding will provide an economic boost to the Peterborough riding during the current difficult economic time.” said MPP Jeff Leal. “At the same time this investment will renew vital infrastructure in and around the Peterborough area.”

These projects are just 7 of 289 across the province that will soon break ground thanks to a federal-provincial-municipal investment of more than $1 Billion.  The governments of Canada and Ontario have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Ontario Communities for the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.

Because the federal and provincial governments understand that infrastructure investments will stimulate the economy, nearly 85 per cent of project applications were approved for funding.
