PETERBOROUGH, ON
- The Senior Citizens Association of Peterborough held an official ceremony today to celebrate the completion of its new Mapleridge Recreation Centre.

Dean Del Mastro, MP for Peterborough; Jeff Leal, MPP for Peterborough; George Harrington, President of Mapleridge Recreation Centre; and Daryl Bennett, Mayor of Peterborough, are pleased to see this important community recreational infrastructure project reach completion.

The Mapleridge Recreation Centre is a new, 10,500 square foot building that doubles the size of the previous building that housed the centre. It also has newly landscaped grounds, over 100 parking spaces and enhanced accessibility features, making it easier for Peterborough’s seniors over 50 to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

The governments of Canada and Ontario have each committed up to $573,333 to the project, the City of Peterborough contributed $200,000 while the Senior Citizens Association of Peterborough contributed the balance of the total project cost of $1.72 million.

“Peterborough residents will benefit for years to come from this modern and accessible facility that brings seniors together for social, recreational and educational activities,” said MP Del Mastro. “Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, we are creating jobs and ensuring that our communities have facilities that improve the quality of life for residents of all ages.”

“The provincial government’s Open Ontario plan is designed to stimulate the economy and create new opportunities to support healthier, more active living while creating jobs,” said MPP Jeff Leal. “In Peterborough, Open Ontario is supporting seniors and contributing to the culture of our community while supporting economic development.”

“Our dream “Home by 11” has finally come true. We will be in our new home on July 2. We thank all 3 governments for their generous contributions,” said George Herrington, President of Mapleridge Recreation Centre. “We know our club members will really enjoy this new building with more space and plenty of parking.”

“I am pleased that the City of Peterborough was able to partner with both levels of government and the Senior Citizens Association of Peterborough to build this wonderful new facility,” said Mayor Bennett. “Peterborough has a strong and vibrant senior community which will be well served by the new Mapleridge Recreation Centre.”

This project is one of more than 760 across the province that is moving forward thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $380 million under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program in Ontario and the Ontario Recreation Program (Ontario REC). The governments of Canada and Ontario teamed up to support Ontario's communities and create jobs by improving recreational infrastructure, as these types of projects also encourage higher levels of participation in physical activity and community building.
