Willowcreek Trail Official Opening – one hand to cut the ribbon are: Paul Ayotte - Mayor of the City of Peterborough, Patrick Connor - Director of the National Trails Coalition, Dean Del Mastro – MP for Peterborough and Doug Peacock, City of Peterborough Otonabee Ward Councillor.
Thanks in part to funding from the National Trails Coalition, the City of Peterborough has added another trail to its ever-expanding network. Dean Del Mastro, Member of Parliament for Peterborough and Paul Ayotte, Mayor of the City of Peterborough officially opened the “Willowcreek Trail” on Thursday, October 14th. The celebration began at 10:30 a.m. at the start of the trail on Ashburnham Drive, across from the Ecology Park.
A generous grant of $120,000. from the National Trails Coalition has helped to make this latest trail possible. The “Willowcreek Trail” will serve to meet the demand for sustainable transportation and recreation in the southeast end of Peterborough. The trail base and pedestrian crossing at Ashburnham Drive were completed in the spring and have been open for pedestrians and cyclists. As the final construction step, the trail was paved at the end of September. The paved trail is now accessible to a broader range of users throughout the seasons.
Willowcreek Trail will allow shoppers and recreational users to travel safely off-road between Willowcreek Plaza and Beavermead Park. From there, users can link directly to the Trans-Canada Trail, the Rotary Greenway Trail, and on to multiple trail connections throughout the City.
The City of Peterborough is committed to providing as many opportunities as possible for residents to replace vehicle trips with walking and cycling trips. This helps to protect our natural environment, reduce traffic congestion and increase health and fitness. Thirty-seven kilometers of multi-use trails have been designed and constructed in the City of Peterborough since 1995.
